Car Seat Safety

Safety is a number one concern for all parents who have children. Foster County Public Health is a Car Seat Distribution/ Education site. Our Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) provides free hands-on instructions and education to parents and caregivers on the proper installation and use of child restraint systems, including car seats, booster seats, and seat belts.

Cribs for Kids

Foster County Public Health provides families with safe sleeping resources including a Pack ‘n Play to ensure families have the resources to keep their child safe through the Cribs for Kids program.

Cribs for Kids ® is a safe-sleep education and distribution program for low-income families to help reduce the risk of injury and death of infants due to unsafe sleep environments. The program addresses specific situations dealing with socioeconomic issues such as crib affordability and cultural practices such as bed sharing and secondhand smoke.

Screening is completed by our trained staff and eligibility varies by site and is based on availability. Graco Pack n’ Plays are available at our office for eligible pregnant and newly delivered mothers.

Health Tracks

Health Track Screenings are a preventative health screening program for children 0-21 years of age that are Medicaid eligible. The goals are:

  1. Early detection and treatment for health problems.
  2. To improve the health of children to reduce healthcare costs through maintenance.

A dental assessment with fluoride varnish is done as well as vision, hearing, physical, laboratory, immunizations, developmental, nutritional and mental health assessments. If problems are detected referrals are made to professionals.

Benefits of Breast Milk

Our Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) provides free, comprehensive lactation support services including:

  • Prenatal breastfeeding education
  • Weighted feeds
  • Latch and positioning guidance
  • Pumping basics and education
  • Referrals to additional support services

Safe Sitter Babysitting

Safe Sitter Babysitting Course. June 30 9am - 2:30pm at Carrington Library Community Room. Registration is required.

Safe Sitter® is the only national nonprofit training program dedicated exclusively to helping young teens develop the skills they need to stay safe and confident in unsupervised situations, whether they are home alone, caring for younger siblings, or babysitting. Three different levels of Safe Sitter courses will be offered by FCPH staff: Babysitting Course, Safe@Home, and Grandparents Getting Started.

The Safe Sitter® Babysitting Course is designed specifically for students in grades 6–8. During this engaging 4–8 hour program, certified Safe Sitter® instructors lead interactive, hands-on learning experiences that include demonstrations, role-playing, and skills practice using soft-bodied dolls and medical manikins. Participants gain valuable knowledge and practical skills in the areas outlined below, helping them become responsible, capable, and prepared caregivers.

Safe@Home program for students learning to care for themselves.

Safe@Home is an introductory level program to prepare students to care for themselves when parents are away for short periods of time. Students learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. The program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence.

Grandparents Getting Started course for safe childcare practices.

Grandparents Getting Started — In this 3-hour course, certified Safe Sitter® Instructors teach grandparents the latest recommendations for caring for infants and children based on current research. Participants will learn safe childcare practices, child behavior management, choking rescue, first aid, and injury care. The course also covers building strong relationships with grandchildren and setting healthy boundaries around babysitting requests. Grandparents will gain practical skills and confidence to help keep their grandchildren safe while creating positive, lasting memories.

WIC

Women, Infants & Children is a program that encourages good nutrition for pregnant or breastfeeding moms and their infants, and also to children up to 5 years of age. If all guidelines are met an individual is eligible for nutrition education and healthy, nutritious food for their family.

WIC is available in Carrington the first Thursday of each month. Call the Devils Lake office to schedule an appointment at 1-866-274-2316.
